Stay Fit Travel Tips -by Holly Rigsby

I have been traveling on and off for the past two weeks. This week marks the last of our summer vacations and trips to visit family. I know first hand how being away from home can take a toll on your fitness regimen. Vacations are notorious for quickly packing on the pounds this summer.

From road trips, to camping, to amusement parks, to visiting with family - each destination is filled with tempting food and drink as well as a change in our exercise routine. I have received several questions regarding the best plan to have in place to prevent a setback during the summer travel season.

Begin by considering if you would like to go into Maintenance Mode - just maintain your progress - or Results Mode - KEEP making progress. This will determine your plan of action as well as the level of commitment to your vacation eating and exercise plan.

Stay Fit Tip 1: Remember WHY you are going on Vacation. If the goal is to feel refreshed after you return, why abandon all of your healthy habits only to return feeling like you need to be a “slave” to your workouts in order to make up for all the weight you gained.

No amount of eating or drinking is worth the effort it will take to remove those excess pounds. Make good choices while you are away and you will be more prepared to overcome any travel fatigue, so you return to your normal routine feeling rejuvenated!

Stay Fit Tip 2: Prevention is KEY In the long run, prevention is always better than the cure.

If you already know ahead of time that you will be practicing in some overindulgence, ,vamp up your exercise and eating habits NOW.The best part about this type of approach is that you have a deadline. This will help keep you motivated to stick as closely as you can to your FYM plan. If you have the time, begin 2 to 4 weeks prior to leaving. This gives you the opportunity to lose 4 to 8 pounds of fat - all before you leave! Allowing you more flexibility while you are away.

Stay Fit Tip 3: Meal Management Strategies. The last thing you want to do prior to, during or after vacation is to not eat.If you choose to skip your meals, two wonderful things happen to your body. First, your metabolism slows down. Next since you brain thinks that you are starving it will tell your body to store any food that it does receive in the form of fat. Skipping Meals = Weight Gain!

The best thing you can do for your body is to begin each day with breakfast and eat a supportive meal or snack every 3 hours. This in turn will fuel your metabolism, provide you with an abundance of energy and allow your body to burn more fat 24-7.

Stay Fit Tip 4: Plan your Splurges. Just as I encourage you to plan your cheat meals with your everyday nutrition plan, you can do the same while on vacation. For instance, if you know you will be enjoying a bountiful lunch, avoid overindulging during breakfast. Instead make your other meals that day light and more supportive.

Keep in mind that a typical restaurant entrée is about 1500 calories - that does not include bread, appetizer or dessert. Keep your meals as healthy as possible, try your best not to over eat, and enjoy yourself by eating things you wouldn’t get at home.

Stay Fit Tip 5: Avoid Fast Food. It never fails, while on our way to our destination spot, we either find ourselves at the Starbucks or McDonald’s in the airport or on the highway, taking in far too many calories before we even get there! Don’t let this happen to you. You can get this junk food anytime. Save your vacation calories for more exciting and rare treats. Avoid the on-the-go temptations by making a point to eat something before you leave or pack some travel snacks such as almonds and dried fruit to help curb your appetite.

Stay Fit Tip 6: Get Moving. The simplest and easiest fitness routine is right outside your door. On vacation there’s no better time to enjoy the benefits of just moving more! Plan a to get out and watch the sunrise or sunset. The purpose of a vacation is to enjoy the amenities, sights, and sounds your destination has to offer.

Stay Fit Tip 7: Forget the GYM. Yes, to avoid unwanted weight you have to exercise….but don’t feel as if you need to spend your time in the hotel workout facilities or a slave to your regular workout routine. You’ll just set yourself up to make excuses. You do not need any equipment to fit a fantastic fat burning workout into your vacation plans. All you need is a little space and your Body!

Check out this routine -

Stay Fit Travel Workout

1. Y- Squats - 10-15

2. Push Ups - 10-15

3. Lunges - 8-10 each side

4. Burpees - 8-10 Perform this body weight circuit 3 to 4 times in a row with little to no rest between moves. Get an energizing workout in a mere 10 minutes or less! Body weight workouts are intense, burn tons of calories, plus they make you look and feel amazing while you are enjoying your vacation. Plan on fitting at 2-3 workouts in for each week you are away.

Your Stay Fit Travel Workout can be completed any where, anytime of the day.

Travel Workout Tips….Recap. Be sure to try out your travel routine at least once at home. Plan your workout for first thing in the morning (right before you shower)– getting this out of the way gives you a positive frame of mind, allowing you to fully concentrate on your guilt-free vacation fun. Vacation and travel doesn’t have to equal weight gain. You have the knowledge and tools to eat well and stay fit, all you have to do is follow through.

It’s okay to indulge but don’t abandon your healthy habits altogether. Try to take in all of the sites and events your vacation has to offer, spending time with the ones you love and enjoying time away from home. Wherever you go, whatever you do, have fun, relax, and enjoy your vacation!

How to file a holiday accident claim -by David Field

Whilst on holiday, you might not feel as protected as you would in the UK, and contracting an illness or getting injured could result in a whole world of complications with regards insurance, health costs and travelling. However, it is likely that you’ll be able to recoup any costs that you incur as a result of the injury, and more on top of that for any emotional damages you suffered.

There is a certain way to go about filing a holiday compensation claim as some regulations abroad might differ to those in the UK; so here are some useful tips on what to do. One of the most important things towards your claim will be documented evidence of an injury. This might come in the form of a doctor’s note for prescribed medicine, or even hospital records for any surgery that they had to carry out.

No matter what your injury, if it is serious enough to file a compensation claim on, then there will be some record of the accident and you need to access this in order to support for your claim. It is important to keep record of any other people who may have been involved in the accident, whether they were directly involved or just witnesses.

If you collect their contact information then their testimony will boost your case. If you want to file a complaint against your tour operator (as part of a package deal) then you’ll also need evidence that you were on a package holiday. This would involve your tour operator providing at least two elements of your holiday, such as the travel and accommodation.

Keep travel and accommodation receipts, and any other evidence that the holiday was booked as part of a package, then you’ll have a stronger case against the company. If your holiday was not part of a tour, then it may be more difficult to file a claim because there is no one party that is completely liable. In this case, you will have to file suit in the country where the accident occurred, and the country’s specific rules will apply.

Many solicitors will have knowledge of this area and the laws that apply in certain countries, so when you put forward your case, you must make this information known to the solicitor. Some regulation will allow you to file suit in the UK if the accident occurred in an EU country, so look at this possibility as well. Report the accident to the authorities, no matter how trivial it may seem.

If you experience a serious accident, then it is likely that hotel staff and doctors will be notified and they will keep records of events. However, if you seem fit enough to recover from the injury without official help, then this might weaken your case somewhat, as you will have less documented evidence recorded by professionals to draw upon during your claim.

Contact a solicitor as soon as you can. Trying to claim the necessary compensation on your own will probably result in the tour operator using every excuse in the book to ignore your claim. With proper legal help, the holiday company is more likely to communicate and come to some sort of agreement with regards compensation. Although solicitors’ fees can be quite significant, it represents the quality of the work they do in helping you get what you deserve.

This author would recommend the experts at Holiday Claims for all holiday complaints and holiday compensation issues. With the right legal help, you will be able to recoup any treatment costs and loss of earnings, and even future loss of earnings, depending on the injury.

10 Tips For Safe Travel Abroad -by Patrick Chong

1) Book aheadIt is tempting to turn up at a town and find a place to stay once you arrive, but it does pay to book your accommodation ahead - if your transport is delayed, you could arrive at a new destination in the middle of the night, and the last thing you want is to be running around, looking for a hotel! If you are intending to travel to a place in peak season or during a festival, booking ahead may be essential for you to find anywhere to stay.

2) Buy your travel insurance…

Given how easily you can buy cheap travel insurance online, there’s really no excuse for travelling uninsured. If you are a frequent traveller and you are concerned about price, consider investing in annual travel insurance - the savings can be considerable.

3) …and read the policy!

Don’t just buy the first cheap travel insurance policy you find and leave it at that. Make sure your travel insurance will cover you for any activities you are going to take part in (especially any dangerous sports), and make sure you read up on any exclusions in the insurance. Thinking you are insured when you are not can lead to some very expensive holiday mistakes!

4) Watch out for conmen

In many countries, tourists are common targets for conmen and pickpockets. Travel insurance can help replace any items that you lose as a result of theft, but by keeping your eyes open and your wits about you, such problems can be prevented. Conmen often work in teams, so if a stranger bumps into you or spills something on you, don’t let yourself be distracted - watch out for their partner who may be trying to rifle through your valuables!

5) Don’t flash your valuables

Another way to avoid attracting conmen is to not show them anything valuable in the first place. Be careful about displaying jewellery, digital cameras, expensive watches, and other valuables while you are aboard, especially if you are in marketplaces or in poorer areas. Make sure you ask permission before you photograph any locals, and be especially careful about photographing near military installations or airports - in some countries this is regarded as espionage!

6) Email your details

The internet isn’t just a good place to pick up cheap travel insurance online - it can also be used to store vital information that you can access anywhere. Email any essential information to yourself before you go, including any details of flights, credit card numbers, passport numbers, insurance information, helplines, embassy information and so on. If you lose any crucial documents, all you have to do is check your email and you’ll have the full details you need.

7) Copy your documents

Make multiple copies of all your essential documents, including your passport, flight details, any booking confirmations, and travel insurance policy. Leave one copy with friends or family at home, and take another copy with you on holiday (keep your copies separate from the original documents!)

8) Be careful with your cards

If you are relying mainly on cards to withdraw cash, try and take more than one card (a debit card and a credit card). Keep one of them on your person and the other hidden away in your room or in a safe, so that you have access to funds in an emergency.

9) Spread your cash around

Don’t carry all of your money in one place. Carry a “mugger’s wallet” with a small amount of cash and no vital cards or documents in it, so that you can surrender it if necessary. Take a mixture of cash and travellers cheques on holiday with you; the latter can be replaced if they are stolen.

10) Use the hotel safe

It’s an obvious facility that a surprising number of people don’t use - the hotel safe is the perfect place to store your valuable and irreplaceable items.

Some holiday disasters can be avoided, others are just down to plain bad luck. But running into trouble doesn’t have to ruin your holiday - by taking a few precautions (and of course, by taking out some good quality travel insurance!) you can make sure that you have a relaxing and stress free holiday.

6 Ways to Save on Honeymoon Travel -by Cori Russell

It’s hard to imagine spending another dime after the nightmare of expenses involved in planning the wedding of your dreams, let alone forking over thousands for a luxury honeymoon vacation. But after months of tireless planning, you will need to get away and spend some alone-time with your new hubby.
Honeymoons can be as costly as a month-long excursion across Europe or as cost-efficient as a weekend getaway at your local B&B. With these budget travel tips, you can escape without sacrificing your ultimate goal: relaxation and reconnection.

Think Outside the Season - Off-season does not necessarily equate to bad weather. Many tropical locations have ideal weather year-round, but rates soar upwards when cold climate residents are looking to escape the winter blues. If you want to hop on a flight immediately following your wedding, consider booking your honeymoon travel arrangements at an off-season location; if you have your mind set on a particular destination, be flexible with your either your wedding date or your departure date to reap big savings.

Consult an Expert - Look to a professional to help you book your vacation - and enjoy big savings. Travel agents provide all sorts of money-saving expertise and can often access on-going sales or last-minute deals on honeymoon travel. They’ll work with you to find the best vacation packages to suit your preferences and budget.

Ask for a Helping Hand - If time away is more important to you than a waffle iron, consider setting up a honeymoon registry. Many travel agents offer services to collect, record, and apply contributions from your guests toward honeymoon resorts and expenditures. Some even allow guests to contribute to specific activities at your destination location, such as scuba diving lessons or boat rides.

Do Your Research - Don’t let your honeymoon take a backseat to the wedding planning process. Start thinking about your vacation once you have established a wedding date, and keep your eyes peeled for deals posted online or in the paper. Give yourself plenty of time to comparison shop. This complete honeymoon travel guide will help you get started.

Earn Rewards - If your credit allows, open a credit card with the best frequent-flier and other travel rewards. Start charging your wedding-day expenses, and cash in on the bonuses for airline tickets, hotel rooms, car rentals, and other upgrades. Be careful here though; you should be able to pay off all expenditures at the end of every month to avoid finance charges and racked up debt. Also be sure to check black-out dates before making your travel arrangements.

Consider the Alternatives - You aren’t bound by the typical island retreat when it comes to honeymoon options, but be sure to weigh the pros and cons of all your choices before booking. While all-inclusive resorts once carried a negative connotation with “mandatory fun” activities, their inclusive honeymoon packages afford you the luxury of a flat-rate and a carefree experience. Bed and breakfasts, on the other hand, offer romantic retreats at typically affordable prices, but can lack exclusive privacy. The point here is that you should do your research, discuss the types of honeymoon vacations available with your fiance, and decide which priorities take precedence. Our guide to honeymoon accommodations can help you weight the options.

Chorao Island in Goa -by Jessica

Goa which is best known for its beaches, hotels and resorts, cuisines, churches and Portuguese culture. There are some little explored spots which are equally amazing in Goa, where one can getaway and find a date with the nature.

Chorao island is one such spot which is emerging as bird watchers haven. Located just 4 km off Panjim along the river Mandovi, Chorao island is a quaint place. Prior to Portuguese domination, the island was called ‘Chudamani’ which means ‘charming precious stone’ in Sanskrit.

Local legends have it that when Yashoda - mother of lord Krishna - threw away diamonds in the sea, the island emerged from them. While locals call Chorao Chodan or Chodna, Portuguese defined it as an island of nobles - ‘Ilha dos Fidalgo’: as the Portuguese noblemen who first settled here found the island a stunning place to live. Chorao island has a small yet beautiful whitewashed church and some old mansions dating back to Portuguese era.

The renowned Dr. Salim Ali Bird Sanctuary is situated here named after world famous Indian ornithologist Dr Salim Ali. Sprawling over an area of merely 1.8 square kilometers, Dr. Salim Ali Bird Sanctuary is home to more than 400 bird species both local and migratory. Besides a rich diversity of exotic birds the sanctuary also hosts small animals like flying foxes, jackals and crocodiles among a variety of fish and insects which form the base of the food chain.

A watch tower has also built in the sanctuary to spot the birds. The permission to visit the sanctuary can be had from the Chief Wild Life Warden, Forest Department, Panaji. Although sanctuary is open throughout the year, summer and monsoon seasons are best avoided as it becomes really hot and muggy during these seasons.

Chorao island can be reached by ferry from Ribander which is situated on the road to Old Goa 3 km off Panaji. If you wish to explore the sanctuary, you’ll need a canoe as the forest department doesn’t offer operational boats. But that’s not a problem either. You can hire a canoe from one of many soft-drink stalls on the ferry wharf in Chorao which also offer guides.

A number of Goa Hotels offer visit to Chorao Island and Mandovi river cruise as part of their package. If you are a bird watching enthusiast or wish to visit Chorao, you can ask your hotel or travel agent to tailor made a birding trip for you.
